Already?? It's b.a.zaar time! Translated, it's the new and soon-t0-be-annual craft fair for Tulsa and Broken Arrow area Etsy sellers! Held in the Farmer's Market area on Main Street in downtown Broken Arrow, OK, it's going to be a fun day.

Come one, come all, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and get all sorts of cool things, handmade by local artisans!

I know the fair deserves a nice big writeup, but I have to be up in 4 hours to iron my tablecloths, finish packing up the car, and drive to B.A. by 6 a.m.! Oy. And what wasn't made in the last precious hours before now will just have to wait for another craft fair. October always seems so far away when you're still in July, signing up for your first "real" craft show. Many lessons learned along the 3-month journey.

I'll try to blog from the fair if there's a break. Otherwise, I'll post a nice big blog post about it after the fact.

See you soon!

not a creature was stirring...

EXCEPT FOR the mouse!!! Except for, not even... same diff.

So here's our saga: We saw a mouse or three over time, caught a few on glue traps, cleaned up mouse poop in a place or two throughout the months, thought they were finally gone...

Yeah... right.

Now this part is a testament to how little I've been cooking up real meals in our house this super hot summer: they had taken over the pantry and had chewed into cardboard boxes of mixes, flour, crackers, cereal, plastic bags of flour, sugar, chocolate chips, styrofoam cups of ramen lunches (they licked those babies clean!).... All without my knowledge. Well, we saw a trace here or there, thought they were gone, were frankly afraid to look too closely... I mean, who wants to actually dig in there and deal with the after effects of a mouse party? An obvious thing to keep putting off...

I spent all afternoon yesterday throwing away 3/4 of our food and paper supplies, taking shelves out of the shelving system (to be thrown away, thank you very much. Plywood with poop and pee on it? For my food? So not happening. How would you ever get it clean??) , shop-vac-ing the poop and the cardboard/styrofoam/paper bits, 409-ing the walls, the shelf supports, the floor.

And what do we find today? Another friggin mouse! The pantry (aka the front-coat-closet-turned-pantry) still smelled bad, so I opened up the door to air it out and a dang mouse ran straight down the vertical metal part of the shelves! What the crap is left in there for him to eat??? NOTHING! Go home, little annoying disease-carrying make-me-want-to-puke animal! Eat some of that fine bright green mouse, er, food in the little plastic box there, and then go share it with your friends! See ya! "Humane" disposal time is OVER!

This is so not my idea of a well-spent weekend afternoon. Or week, for that matter. Now I get to have new wood cut for our shelves, finish airing out the closet, make sure the stupid mice actually stay out this time (how??), and shop for new food for my family.

Reminds me of the time I thought squirrels were cute... until one got into my dorm room. The thought still makes me shiver to this day!

speechless saturday...

IMAG0181, a photo by binkwaffle - Holly on Flickr.

Hello Mudder, Hello Fadder....

Guess where the boys are this week? At CAMP!!! Woohoo!!!

They did an awesome day camp this summer for a couple of weeks, and there's also a resident version. I kept telling the boys it just wouldn't fit in this year, but we decided to make it work. Wow! I'll do THAT every summer from now on!! :-)

We drove the boys out to Mannford, OK, (middle of nowhere) on Sunday night. As we drove away from camp, we realized that Husky, Aidan's favorite stuffed animal, hadn't made it into the car. So Brad and I drove home the 30+ minutes, grabbed Husky, and drove back again to Mannford (still in the middle of nowhere). Turns out, someone stole the copper from the power substation for our neighborhood that evening, so our house was w/o power when we got home the first time. So at least the second trip to camp was cool, had music, and gave us something to do with our evening. I think it was 90 or so in the house when we left. I was too annoyed and afraid to look at the thermostat when we got home for the final time. Ugh. (We came back to town -- again -- and had dinner at 9 p.m., checked our phones until AEP/PSO said our power was back on, then went home around 11.)

They called us from camp on Monday night and said that Aidan wanted to come home, but the camp director took care of it. No call last night, so whew! :-) Two more nights to go! They're doing a ropes/obstacle course, rock wall climbing, swimming in the lake and the pool, ziplining... I'm sure they're totally wiped out by bedtime!

Meanwhile, I've been trying to do some cleaning (Ever have one of those weeks when nothing you did seems visible in the end? Yeah. Me too.) and some sewing. I have a craft show in October, and Murphy's Law says that it will be here before I know it!

Because today is expected to break Tulsa's all-time high of 115 degrees, I drove Brad to work today since his a/c overheats his car at the moment. He works about 20-25 minutes away, and somewhat closer than home to the Fabricut fabric outlet. I say somewhat because it is farther east, but leaving the Port and going to Fabricut then back home is kind of like doing a big triangle rather than just a coupla miles past his office. BUT, somehow that gives me mental license to "keep going" to the outlet for my fabric on occasion. Check out what I got! Won't those plush and textured fabrics be awesome for fall and winter bags and clutches?? Yum!!!

And check out those rolls of basic fabrics! Interlining, interfacing... They'll come in handy on everything! Especially for --- ready? --- FIVE DOLLARS!!! TOTAL! For that entire bag full of rolls! I've really got to take Brad to work more often. :-)

So I'm off to SEW SEW SEW now! And it ain't a "dry heat" here in Tulsa. Not most days. (Okay, I had to look today of all days. 26% humidity. Trust me, that's NOT been the norm.) And there's no rain. In all seriousness and with no whining, I truly don't know how they survived during the Dust Bowl era. I suppose "survive" is the key word.

Sooo.... I've reset the horribly totally-not-level pool after much weeping and gnashing of teeth. And sweating buckets of sweat. And crying. Just once this time, though. :-)

I've learned a lot in the month that we've owned a pool...

1. 'Create a stable, level foundation' is easier said than done. Especially when nothing on the box or at the pool company's site mentions that sand is better than dirt, even though that was in the back of my mind from my college years for some reason.

2. All the legal CRAP on the packaging for the pool chemicals make it hard to figure out the simplest of things. Sure, each bottle or box is plastered with a big 1, 2, 3, or 4, but there are multiple 1s, several 2s, and so on! Just spell it out for me in plain English! I promise I won't sue. Or eat the chemicals. Or whatever else the fine print is covering the company's butt for.

3. When you don't read the instructions first, you go out and invest in a nice big outdoor extension cord for the pump.... only to find out later that it's supposed to be a GFCI one. (If anyone with electrical experience or with pool experience knows, do I HAVE to have one if the pump itself has a GFCI box thingy on it?) So you have to wait until payday to go get a new one (once you find it... None at the two Ace hardwares by us), and until then you feel compelled to unplug the pump every time your kids are in it. Just in case.

4. We will FOREVER have some form of a pool in our yard from now on. That's a big step for me, too! I was always afraid to have one around for the sake and safety of my kids or those that might visit. But it's all about responsibility, not going without simply because of my paranoia. Heck, I own a gun! I have a CC license! And I'm afraid of a pool? Really, Holly. Think it through...

5. It is, in retrospect, a wise decision of ours to have two children. When they go out to the pool, the boys have only each other to pay attention to. So when I hear yelling (hopefully happy yelling) and splashing, I know they're both alright. The odds of someone kidnapping them out of the pool, of both being incapacitated at the same time, or some other tragic yet unlikely scenario, are rather slim. BUT if I'd had 3, two could be playing and ignoring the 3rd one who might truly be in trouble. Therefore, I've come to the conclusion that 2 is the safest number in a pool. Or a family. LOL Okay, not in a family. But it works for this theory, at least. And may be a totally flawed conclusion, but please don't burst my bubble. It's a hot and weary summer, and they're OUTSIDE! That doesn't happen often in Tulsa in the end of July!

6. Although the weight of a billion gallons of water in your pool are indeed heavy, they apparently do not have the strength to shove said water through a 50 (75?) foot hose to water the front yard when you need to drain it due to the aforementioned lack of leveling. But you don't know that until you drag the hose around the house in the 100+ degree heat in the sun, hook up the hose to the sprinkler, figure out how to attach the hose to the pool, and all at about 6:30 in the morning (Okay, I guess it wasn't 100 degrees that morning. 80ish? It felt hotter. May have been the 6:30 part) on a Saturday when you wanted to sleep in but were afraid you'd scald the plants if you didn't water early enough in the day. I literally had to watch our water drain away into the neighbor's yard. Not ONCE did the thought that just NOW popped into my head pop into my head that day: I could have used a shorter hose and siphoned it, couldn't I? I'm an idiot. Sigh.

7. When the drain is 3 inches above the base of the pool, the only way to finish draining approx. 200+ gallons of water (is that RIGHT? I did my old geometry magic and came up with that.. Who knows... that was 20 years ago..) is to grab three mixing bowls (because nobody owns a bucket, right? Oh, they do? Well, we apparently don't.) and have two unenthusiastic helpers help you bail for 30+ minutes. Then you get the Shop Vac and get the rest for the next 30 minutes, disassembling and emptying the Shop Vac every 3 minutes in the process. But hey, we got all the grime that had accumulated as we took 3 unfiltered days to finally get the last of the water out. A bright spot, perhaps? :-)

But all is well now. The pool is back up. It's more level than before. It's not like I'm installing a several thousand dollar pool that will last forever. The water is clear. The boys love to skim the junk from the trees that fall into the water. (Which is good, since I can't find a cover anywhere in town and need to order one.) The chemicals are working their magic. And my boys can cool off, have fun, and give Mom some quiet time, all at the same time! What sweet children! :-)

The garden is half dead, but the okra's doing well! If only I liked okra! LOL But Aidan does, and he specifically requested it.
The upside of the heat is that I can replant EVERYTHING in my garden if I start soon, and I can harvest it all over again! Or for the first time, I guess I should say this year. That's the one (and I emphasize ONE) upside to the perpetual summers here in Tulsa. Tomatoes in September and October? Yes, ma'am!! And carrots, broccoli, and the like for Thanksgiving and Christmas!

Ignore the grass in the pictures. One can only stand the heat for a number of hours. Mowing will commence tomorrow.

i got in!!!!

YAY! I wanted to join this swap, but it filled up SO quickly on a weekend when I was really sick. Quite a jump! We live in a 50s house and although it's nothing like a 50s modern ranch or anything, I try to do what I can inside to make it as modern as I can. I've played with colors for the 10 years we've been here, and I've finally realized that I love the avocados, golds, tomatoes, aquas, and the chartreuses of the 50s and 60s. As accents, that is. I went through a "green phase" where Brad literally forbade me to purchase anything else green for a while. LOL I've been released now and am allowed to buy it again in reasonable quantities. :-)

So, I'm thinking that my new brown sectional needs a cool mid-century modern quilt on it this fall. Here's the color scheme and the angular and modern look of the squares I'm thinking of doing....

I need to knit a big bulky pillow cover or two, too, for some texture!

Pillow Talk Swap Results

WHINE TIME:

I'm officially sick of this weather. Too hot to do anything outside, too hot in the house (gets up to 80 indoors by mid afternoon). I was NOT created for this climate. Not by a long shot. 80 or 85 is my maximum ideal outdoor temp. And that's only for a month or two at the most. Here, we get a good 6 months above that temp, and right now we're in the triple digits and have been for a few weeks. That usually starts later in July or August, so we're really tired of the fact that it started so soon this year. Ugh.

SHOW OFF TIME:

So... instead, I've kept busy in other ways...

Like this pillow I made for my The Pillow Talk Swap partner on Flickr:

Isn't that piping around the edge great, just inside of the scrappy binding?

Here's what it looked like before I quilted it:

Enjoy, partner!

another fun-filled evening....

Last night was our 4th time to go to the "dinner with the principal" that is always up for bid at our school's silent auction. It's always a magazine-worthy poolside place or cozy yard with exquisite landscaping... Sure not like MY back yard!!) with elegantly placed tables, delicious and ample food, top-notch service, and endless glasses of "special water" (water with mint, lemons, limes, and oranges), wine, beer, and margaritas. The dinner is hosted by 5 couples who go all out with food, decorations, fancy invitations.... the whole nine yards.

This year's theme was a backyard picnic. We played horseshoes and washers; mason jars full of Queen Anne's lace, marigolds, and zinnias from the farmer's market were on the tables; fried chicken and gourmet cole slaw were served... One of the couples hosted it in their beautiful backyard and their equally beautiful home.

Thanks, Mayo party parents, for another highly successful and entertaining evening with a few couples who have become our friends over the last 5 years, not just random parents to our kids' schoolmates. Here's my mosaic of ideas for my partner this round.

It's been a fun swap to be in each time. I always get my partner and then think, "Oh, crap! I don't know what to make THAT person!" Then of course, I always do. But not without much self doubt. So far, though, I've always been pleased with them in the end, and I've even wanted to keep one or two for myself!

So, partner, have fun! The living room looks basically like this..... (minus the brown wall. It's just too dark in there now that we have the brown sofa. It'll soon become chartreuse or aqua....)

So have fun! Pick whichever room you want to spice up, and go for it! Think texture, gemoetric, IKEA, modern, bold, etc! Save folksy, crafty, and patchworky for another time and have fun with it!

The bedroom has light aqua bedding on this IKEA bed...

Lighter aqua walls, red curtains, and soon to have the two fabric panels seen above in the living room. Okay, here's to another (how many times have I said this??) "restart" of sorts. I pseudo-fixed the looks of the blog and will keep working on it while Brad designs the one I really want. Once he's finished with his clients who actually pay him something.... Yeah, you wives of geeks know what I mean.

Our lives have been HECTIC the last month or so, filled with school activities (am I just tired at this point, or are there always more things crammed in at the end of the school year???), hockey, work and "side jobs," raised garden building, big-ol'-dirt-pile-hauling from driveway to back yard, a surprise trip to Orlando (surprised the boys at the airport!), a craft show and all that is involved with preparing for one.... So needless to say, while I've got pics out the wazoo, I've also got a house that currently resembles those on Hoarders. So I leave you with a picture while I go dig us out this morning. And afternoon. And, aw, heck. Probably all week! But I'll add pics of all our recent adventures periodically. And it's almost over. But even though I still LOVE snow and cold weather, I have decided that I do NOT like to be stranded at home for 4 days straight. It was fun for the first couple of days and was a total license to do nothing if I wanted to do nothing.

Then it started to get annoying to pick the same blanket up off of the living room floor for the 10th time that day or trip over the snow pants and boots that didn't have a mudroom in which to hang...

The weekend was a nice break, and then it hit us again. And again, it was fun. For about a day. Now the "I'm bored.... Mom, will you play with me?.... I don't WANT to read a stupid book... Why CAN'T we sleep in the living room tonight?... I don't want to go outside.... He won't leave me alone!" has worn on my nerves for one too many days. I'm ready for things to be "normal" again.

I know that the summer is 6 times this long and is a temperature I HATE, plus I'm a strong believer in a continuous learning (year round) schedule, so this should be easy for me to handle these last 2 weeks. BUT, even though I love the weather and all, I don't like that I can't get out in it very well in my current automotive situation, and I don't like the unexpected "have fun! Your kids are home for 2 weeks!" surprise that I didn't plan for. If I'd planned out the break like I do Spring Break or Summer Break, or at least mentally prepared myself for it, I'd be better off. Not so much this week. There's no schedule. There's no list of chores or limit on the TV. This mom has kicked into survival mode for a day or two and does NOT want to play Halo Reach again, thank you very much. Moms don't do well with first person war video games. Or apparently Mario Brothers 3, World 8. "Don't do that world, Aric. Mom's not ready for it yet." Thanks.

But I did read all of my book that I got Tuesday night in anticipation of that night's snow. The Pioneer Woman: Black Heels to Tractor Wheels(Why is the image so freaking huge? Don't know. Don't care to try to edit it a 4th... 5th?... time to figure it out. ) is an awesome book with a lot of insight. And comedy. And romance. And has me wishing all the more that we lived somewhere other than the middle of town. Ahh, acre or so in the "country" with a Starbucks and a Target still within 15 or 20 minutes, where are you? And nest egg that will get us that acre? Where are YOU?

This morning, I'm tidying up the not-so-tidy house (and blogging...), then we're going to see Gnomeo and Juliet before we pick Brad up from work and go order a sofa for our living room. We waited for a check from one of Brad's side web jobs, and now we're getting a sectional so that we're not all fighting for the only seats in the room. Aaah! Nice! Too bad that it'll take 2 or 3 weeks to arrive. Bummer. But the end is in sight, right? And the boys will be back in school in the meantime, so all is well. :-)

Lest anyone criticize the city for their efforts to remove the immense snow we've had lately, this Yankee transport is actually proud of their accomplishments this year. That's a first. Seriously, our average snowfall for a YEAR is 9.1 inches. We've gotten approximately 25 inches in the last month! In the past, I've gone off on the city for their usual "do very little about it and wait for it to melt" approach. This year, I think they've done as good a job as a semi-southern state can do at removing two friggin' feet of snow from an entire city.

The whiny butts who are crying that they still can't get out of their driveways need to stop and think for a minute. Forty-seventh largest city in the United States plus 30-some-odd snowplows (I've also heard 50ish. Either way...) .... really? You expect them to plow out your neighborhood streets?? Come on. Think that one through. While their idea of priority areas in an entire city and your idea of them may differ, your little cul-de-sac does NOT belong on either list. Be reasonable. That's a LOT of mileage if they drove down every neighborhood street in the city... twice if we wanted both lanes/directions cleared... Give me a break.

Okay. Venting over. Now then. Some cool pictures....

Brad works at the Port of Catoosa, and we took him to work yesterday and got to see the trucks load up on salt while we were there. I've always seen the big mountains of salt before, I've known what they were, etc.. But I'd never really paid attention to their massive size, the sheer amount required to salt an entire city, the small dent a whole semi truck's load would make in the pile... no wonder we still use barges and the like to transport things!

I mean, look at that truck!!! How many truckloads of that stuff makes a mountain that size???

Check out all the trucks waiting in line for salt. Brad says that they were lined up by the dozens the other day, early one morning, probably sleeping in their cabs (I always wanted to do that. How is it that I have a trucker for an uncle and I've never ridden along with him and slept in the little bed in the cab??) while they waited for their turns.

Then it's hauled away to wherever we keep our salt in each city or town, and later it's used on the streets.

Thank you, city, county, and state workers, who have worked 12 hour shifts for two weeks now to make our streets safer. And don't forget that this Ohio girl is actually impressed this time around. Keep up the good work!

QUILTING COUTURE: Vintage sheet Asterisk Chenille Quilt

How cool is this stuff??? It's SNOWY here! Officially 14 inches in Tulsa, breaking a record of 12.9 inches before. I'm loving it!

We got all the usual things over the weekend: milk, bread, chili ingredients, water..... gas cans for the generator, ice scrapers, space heaters, hotel reservations... thankfully, the power stayed on because 1) the generator carburetor is currently "shellacked" inside because we didn't start it often enough in the last 3 years of its life and we're not mechanically inclined enough to figure it out in the midst of the emergency, and 2) the hotel is on the other side of town and we currently own a Honda Civic and a 4-door Volvo. Yeah. MAYBE 6 inches of ground clearance. But hey, it's a Hybrid! Meh. (Don't get me started.)

So, with the power on, Dish uninterrupted (Sorry, Cox. Even in the worst of storms, we've seldom had a problem. Don't miss ya a bit.), and plenty of video games for the boys, we're enjoying our snow days. They got 20+ inches out at the Port, so Brad's working from home with his laptop on his lap, his bright green headphones on (did I mention the boys were playing video games?), and a cup of freshly brewed coffee at his side.

Now, the only issue is that in all the purchasing that I did all weekend long (how many times can one go back to Walmart or Target in a weekend? And does going to a different location exempt you from feeling like you went "back" again for the 4th time?) is that I overprepared for some situations and underprepared for others. For instance, we could have fed hot chocolate to the entire neighborhood in a really warm room with two space heaters (assuming someone else had had a generator to power said space heaters) while also feeding chili and coffee to the same number of people.

BUT.... if you need real chocolate or toilet paper, time's running out. We have one bag of Aldi semisweet chocolate chips and a bottle of Hershey's syrup. That's it. The box of "family size" brownies are for some family of 2, maybe 3. They lasted all of 2 hours yesterday. Maybe.

I remember thinking, "Oh, chocolate! .... Ah, it's on the other side of the store. I'll get it at the next place." Yeah. Mm hm.

"What's this coupon? Oh, yeah. The toilet paper. Eh, we have half a package left. We'll be good. Not worth getting out of line a second time." Four rolls and counting. Glad we have boys.

So I'm off to clean up the kitchen, fold some clothes, then sit down with some sewing or knitting and enjoy our second of several snow days this week. Cuz there's NO WAY they're going back to school this week based on Tulsa's ability to deal with this much (let alone any) winter weather. But at some point, Brad'll go back to work and take the "good car" with him, so I'm going to enjoy my time now before I get back into the housework routine later this week. Moms deserve a break. Especially when they forgot to get chocolate!

procrastination ended....

cool blue02
Originally uploaded by binkwaffle - Holly
How long has this poor guy been sitting in my office, just waiting to be bound? My. Gosh. I'm. In. She's starting to collect handmade items for a future baby's nursery; and I had the honors of providing this as-yet-unknown little one with his or her first piece: my green and brown zig zag baby quilt. (No, mutual friends; this is just a "someday when Baby comes" nursery. I'm not insinuating or announcing a thing. I promise.)

In return, Annie unloaded all her bag-making scraps onto me. The second was an XL Ziploc storage bag)...

Check out all these strips... most are 2.5" or wider... Great for strip quilts, quick piecing, key fobs...

And then there's the Amy Butler/Joel Dewberry/and friends collection (including several out-of-print babies!!):

And my VERY favorite, my very own collection of Anna Maria! (And a few that just looked Anna-ish enough to go together) The boys kept yelling in their best Greek accents "Anna Maria!!" when I'd find another piece. They're quick learners... :-) :

And last but not least, a little Munki Munki, even! Annie and I have a friend who used to own a quilt shop here in Tulsa. This friend apparently was one of Heather Ross's first retailers, so I'm wondering if Annie got this sushi yardage from her. And then there are the beloved and highly sought after Mendocino prints... :

And isn't that Japanese print at the bottom so cute? I saw one of Annie's bags made out of it at her house yesterday, so I was very excited when I realized I had a piece of the fabric, too! I'm easily pleased when it comes to crafty things... :-)

So, I'm going to be BUSY, getting that Etsy shop updated with awesome new things from my new treasures! Between the crafting and the swap leverage, I'm excited! Thanks, Annie!!

where the heck have i been??

Well, I've been working a lot more at Loops, so that's the biggest chunk of it. And you know how life gets in the way of the living you'd rather be doing... Oh, well...

In the few free times hidden away, I've accomplished quite a few things, such as...

This blanket for a friend's baby. She had a boy after 3 girls... and after thinking the whole pregnancy that this was a girl, too... Needless to say, they needed a boyish quilt in their house!

And then I made this for a friend/coworker to give to one of her friends whose baby is due soon. The nursery theme is outdoors, hunting, etc., and my friend said this one was the coolest one at the shower. Yay!

I'm quite addicted to swaps, too...

The Scrappy {Strip} Swap on Flickr was fun. I traded these strips and sent them to an international point as yet unknown. (I have to remember next time that international things take longer, so I shouldn't wait for the due date to send. Sorry, partner!)

And then there was the Savvy {Seasons} Swap. Mine's just going out today, after a hectic week and a few design setbacks... For instance. When you use Elmer's glue, it doesn't really work well at all. There's a reason only school kids use it and not very successfully, I might add. Too runny, not tacky enough, and long in drying at the end. Sigh. Lesson learned. You can't always use just whatever's already on hand. But partner, it'll be winging (wheeling?) its way to you today!

A few sneak peeks...

Then there was the [3 x 6] Sampler Quilt Mini Bee. I was a glutton for punishment and did an entirely too time-consuming square to send to my 6 partners in my "beehive." They turned out really cool, but this round of the bee will use a MUCH simpler square than all that cutting, gluing (yes, gluing), handsewing, ripping out, machine appliqueing... But my partners got pretty rockin' squares, if I do say so myself. :-)

And that's what I've been up to! Well, among other things. And over a period of time. The squares I started months ago. The lights I made this week. All the rest was somewhere in between. Not nearly enough creativity time for my liking, but now that my window's open, the a/c isn't running, and the clouds are in the sky, this is my time of year! I'm ready to do more with my Etsy shop, to hole up at home as much as possible, and to enjoy the fall and winter!

Let the creativity begin! It's an attic fan, breeze, and light rain. MY WINDOWS ARE OPEN!!! Here in Tulsa, that's been a big no-no for the last few months! A "cold front" is moving in right now, and we've gone from 100+ yesterday to 70-something right now!!! Will it last? Of course not. But it sure feels good right now!!! This past month, we've hit 80 to 85 in the house by afternoon, thanks to our lovely 1950s original windows and 30ish year old a/c unit. It runs its little heart out all day long, but it never cools the house completely down when it's 100+ outside. So this rocks.

Ooh, here comes the big rain now. Ahhh... I can smell the wet dirt and pavement, too. What a way to begin the first week of school!!!! Now granted, I'm sure the teachers aren't loving the inside day b/c of the rain, but I suppose they'd be inside most of the day, anyhow, because of the heat. So it's all good.

The boys started school yesterday. It was more of a bittersweet thing for me than I thought it'd be. Was I ready for the monotony and the sheer boredom of the summer to be over? Absolutely. Am I excited about the year, the cooler weather, fall and Christmas, etc.? You bet! But for some reason, I was nervous for the boys yesterday. Maybe it was because they moved up into new areas at school this year?

Their school (an AWESOME magnet school) groups grades into different "instructional areas" so that there's a multi-age environment and a sharing of teachers, resources, etc. Both boys moved out of last year's instructional areas into new ones this year, so I guess I was apprehensive about the move. Of course, they did fine and had no problems at all. Not that I logically should have thought that they would, as it's an awesome school where we know everyone, love all the teachers, etc. And Aric left the group that Aidan entered this year, so it's not like I don't know what to expect there.

Aric's doing an accelerated math program this year, too, though, which makes me VERY excited and antsy at the same time. I LOVE math and can't wait to do his homework with him. But I have to be on top of things and make sure he's not getting in over his head or getting too frustrated. A 3rd grader doing 6th grade math could get bogged down if we're not careful.

Brad says he gets his math abilities from me. :-) Actually, his words were more like, "Wow, that's totally you. He didn't get it from me." :-) I still get flak over not becoming an electrical engineer, the profession those high school aptitude tests always said I should do. Yeah, that's where the left and right brains digressed. I wanted to sing, not engineer. I wanted to create and make art, not wire things together. "Yeah, but it would have paid off our school loans so you could do the art later." Hindsight's 20/20. Oh well. Life is still good. Sorry, babe.

Okay, Mommy has a whole hour before she has to go to work, so she's going to go play at the sewing machine for a few. And listen to the rain. And the lack of "Rescue Heroes," fighting, and "Mom, I'm hungry!" For a few hours, anyway.

or a girl, perhaps?

So a boy's quilt wasn't up someone's alley? How about a girl's? This is a fun colorful one that was surprisingly hard to photograph. Well, I guess I shouldn't have been THAT surprised since it was in the office on a cloudy day since the back deck was all rain-soaked. This and the Shades of Blue quilt were two experiments at making an affordable standard quilt for my Etsy shop. Still working on that. Turns out a boatload of scraps still takes a long time to sew together and then to quilt. Who knew? Quilting takes time! Huh.
This one is a little larger at 42" square. I think I'll be shooting for somewhere between that and the 33" square blue one for the "Etsy standard," but both are awesomely soft, squishy, and adorable. Can a fun, squishily soft baby quilt ever be the wrong size, really?

When I uploaded pictures to Flickr, I put "Pretty in Pink" as the quilt title, which led to a discussion over whether that phrase still conjures up memories of a movie not fit for a baby girl, or if it's back to simply being a phrase. So I went with "The Bee's Knees" instead because of the bees on the fabric. Not that I ever really got that phrase. Anybody know how it originated?

It's a boy!

shades of blue01
Originally uploaded by binkwaffle - Holly
No, Mom, I'm not pregnant. Thanks, Andrea! We have the spray and will be dousing the vine, bushes, and part of the garden tonite. Seriously, the bug factor (are slugs officially bugs, too? If not, broaden it to a pest factor) is the biggest turnoff for me when it comes to gardening. They just flat out gross me out. They don't scare me, but they are just plain gross. And it feels like they're crawling all over me once I've seen a few. Ewww....

Bugs!!!!

What is this bug??? There are hundreds of them all over an aggressive vine coming from my neighbor's yard. The vine overtakes everything on my side of the fence every year, but this year it's worse because it has these black things all over it! Now, granted, it looks like they're killing the plant, but in the process, I don't want them to kill the plants underneath them, the ones that are mine!!! And they're VERY close to my garden, and I did not do all that work to have a bug colony eat the fruit of my labor. Literally! HELP!!

I probably did a very stupid thing (Did I mention my thumb is only very slightly a pale pale green and that this is the first year my garden is still alive at this point in the spring/summer?) and tried to hose them all off. I had two thoughts: (1) they might get mad and fly away, or (2) they might be so wussy that the force of the water kills them instantly. Apparently, I was wrong on both accounts, because they're all still there. So now what? Do I spray them with something? Of course we want to rip out as much of the vine as we can, too, but the roots are on the other side of the fence (and it's a rental so who knows who lives there right now?) and I really don't relish the idea of ripping out all those vines with the bugs still all over them. Ewww. And they're just barely hanging over one side of the garden (which is how I found them, when I was trimming back a few bush branches), so they'll all fall off into the garden as soon as we start ripping them out.

Help!

Teacher Gifts 2010

So, my boys to come into contact with a good half-dozen teachers every day. It's an AWESOME magnet school here in Tulsa that anyone living in the district has GOT to at least come tour and consider for their kids. It was originally a lab school and a "demonstration" school where all the teachers from the entire district came for a few days to learn alternative ways to teach kids based on kids' brain research and the like. Now it's just a "normal" walls-free multi-age hands-on school that still operates the same way but that doesn't have teachers coming to learn.

Anyhoo, all that's to say... The boys each have a "homebase" teacher and a "family" teacher. (Homebase is based on their grade or age group; family is a multi-age "class" that meets several afternoons a week, where they get to learn to interact with other ages, to learn from each other, to help the younger ones learn, etc.) So the "main" 2 teachers for each boy got a reusable shopping bag using this pattern.

(To be honest, I was underwhelmed with the pattern and project--sorry to the designer--but they're done and that's that. I wish I'd reinforced them with a little interfacing, but I guess they are shopping bags, after all. So, there they are. Ain't redoing them now! Overall, they're cute; just a pain in the you-know-what to make. Not overly quick to whip up.)

THEN, of course, the boys came home from school one afternoon; not to drool and gush over my long hard work, but to insist that Mrs. So and So, Mr. You Know Who, etc., all needed one, too. After all, they all teach the boys each day. Oy. So I set out to create a more time efficient project for the rest of them, and voila! After a zillion searches online and a hybrid of a billion tutorials, patterns, and photos, here's what I came up with:

A tutorial will follow this week, now that the teachers all have their gifts and the final rush of the school year's end is over. Shelley made it a Loops Original pattern today, blogged about it, and will start selling it online (should be on the Loops site in a day or two), in the store, and on Ravelry. How cool is that?

I've had quite a few subjects for guinea pigs, so the pattern should be spot on. I'll be knitting one out of a bulkier yarn this next week or two so that we have an example of how it knits up with larger yarns. I made a tiny one for a coworker's baby shower, so I need to get a photo of it from her (I know. Bad Holly. Take the pics BEFORE you gift the item!) to show how small the same pattern can go on smaller needles and yarns.

The "gonna run over and take a few pics of Sophie in the newest version" idea turned into "Aunt Holly, why don't we try all of them on?" and "Aunt Holly, look! We hung a sheet on the clothesline!" instead. It was fun, though. All the poses were the girls' ideas, too. No need for prompting. Girls seem to be naturals at the art of posing. :-)

binkwaffle button bands, anyone?

Introducing binkwaffle button bands! The String Quilt takes a long time!!! It utilizes scraps and "strings" of fabric and so doesn't cost a lot to make, assuming you have scraps galore lying around. But wow! The time involved is long. But it's fun. That's what counts, right? And the fact that it looks cool? :-)

This baby has all sorts of fabrics in it, from solid cottons and linen to Amy Butler and Joel Dewberry out-of-print prints to a rescued skirt to munki munki PJs... Tres fun. I used the paper piecing method; not sure I'd use that method again, as I had a lot of stretching and had to trim the squares again and again. Might give the washable stabilizer a try next time.

I used a wonky unplanned crooked set of lines for the quilting. I really like it! It's SOOOO much easier and quicker than mapping out the quilt lines first, although I still had a couple of fixes that had to be made because they were SO random. But very fun, nonetheless.

I'm going to put it in my Etsy shop, so if you know anyone who would like it.... well... :-)

It's approx. 38"x50" and has a 100% cotton batting in the center. I will do a couple of things differently the next time around, but all in all, I think it's perfect! NOT what I can usually say for my first attempts at creating something from scratch.

And of course, as is the story for most of us creatives, I sat in our employee meeting the morning before the baby shower, sewing the changing pad's binding instead of knitting. Yeah. Creating always takes longer than you plan for it to. When will I learn?

Congratulations, Dan and Anna! And Aaron! Can't wait to see her! (we won't mention the completely huge, time consuming, tedious, handsewn, and handquilted one I started in high school and finished after I got married, of which I then didn't take a single photo before I gave it away... Jamie, are you reading this? Can ya take a pic for me?).... This is my first "modern" quilt. Funky and bold fabrics, random sizes of fabric pieces, piecing on the BACK.... I discovered this blog a few months ago, and it's only pulled me deeper and deeper into the world of quilting and taking my sewing ideas to a new level. A couple of these are still the "old" style, but the rest are the new and improved method, all thanks to a wonderful pattern and tutorial from Elizabeth at Oh Fransson!. Thanks, Elizabeth! She had the best ways of finishing off my pouches that I'd have never thought up if I'd spent the rest of my life dedicated to the process. And no, I'd have given up long before that, leaving the world devoid of these cute little guys! :-)

They'll be going into my Etsy shop this weekend, with more like them in the near future. I made a little dress to go with it (for contest brownie points... they didn't work...), and my love for fabric and sewing was reborn. Because of this newly rediscovered love, my knitting took a backseat many days. So when a couple of friends asked me for the pattern to Sophie's Shrug, I cranked one out -- errors and all -- and never really got back to proofing it. Turns out it's not as easy to "whip up" a pattern as I thought. Eternal thanks goes to all those who've created well-written patterns!
Two tests and two more nicely outfitted nieces later, I still didn't have a clearly written pattern.

So when this yummy yarn from Blue Sky came in to the store, I just had to have it. Okay, neither have I... until now...
This is for a very special project which shall remain secret for now, but I just had to show off my new love: Heather Ross fabric. She has some designs available in quilting fabrics, others available only as Munki Munki pajamas. Because the artwork is so creative and adorable, the PJs are in high demand as well, selling on eBay and Etsy as "one XL sleeve" and "one left front pants panel" and so on... Very very cute. AND, for whatever strange reason, these pajamas -- which run close to $100 a pair -- have shown up in Marshall's and TJMaxx this past year for anywhere from $10 to $17!!! (Needless to say, I'd love you forever if you found some, especially the winter scenes, at your local Marshall's... just sayin'...) Used in small amounts to make it go farther, it can make a cute project elevate to a whole new level of cuteness. Or so I tell myself as I search the very same Marshall's yet again.

Does it help that I'm not keeping the whole yard, that I'm trading half of it for two more Heather Ross designs from another Heather Ross and Munki freak? Yeah, I didn't think so. Oh, well. It was worth a try.

what's a binkwaffle?

What is a binkwaffle???

A binkwaffle is a game made up between father and infant son when our youngest, Aric, was a colicky newborn. It was one of the only things that kept him happy, so the word became a permanent entry in our family's dictionary. When we needed a cute and catchy name for our birth announcement business, it seemed like a great name! Catchy, VERY original, yet memorable.
